1500pt Logan's Heros list v1.0

I'm in the process of coming up with my 1500 point Logan Grimnar army list. The basic concept of this list is like any other Logan army, Hit 'em hard and fast. Here is the list as it stands...

HQ: Logan Grimnar, The Great Wolf

Troops: Wolf Guard Pack
      1 Wolf Guard in Power Armour Close Combat Weapon; Combi-Meltagun
      1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour Frost Weapon; Assault Cannon
      1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour Thunder Hammer; Storm Shield
      1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour Storm Shield; Frost Weapon
      1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour Wolf Claw; Wolf Claw
      1 Drop Pod

Troops: Wolf Guard Pack
       1 Wolf Guard in Power Armour Close Combat Weapon; Combi-Meltagun
       1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour Storm Bolter; Frost Weapon; Cyclone Missile Launcher
       1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour Storm Shield; Thunder Hammer
      1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour Combi-Meltagun; Frost Weapon
      1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour Storm Shield; Wolf Claw
      1 Drop Pod

Troops: Wolf Guard Pack
      1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour Wolf Claw; Wolf Claw
      1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour Storm Bolter; Power Fist
      1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour Storm Shield; Chain Fist
      1 Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour Thunder Hammer; Storm Shield
      1 Drop Pod

Troops: Grey Hunters Pack
   9 Grey Hunters Pack  Wolf Standard; Bolt Pistol x9; Bolter x8; Close Combat Weapon x9; Meltagun
    1 Rhino

Troops: Grey Hunters Pack
   9 Grey Hunters Pack  Wolf Standard; Bolt Pistol x9; Bolter x8; Close Combat Weapon x9; Meltagun
    1 Rhino

 The way I am trying to build each unit is so that they have a good mix of weapons to deal with anything that comes at them. I am also mixing in Storm Shields to help each unit survive. The Power Armored Wolf Guard split off and join the Grey Hunters, and Logan will likely join either the Cyclone Missile toting squad or the Assault Cannon squad to give them Tank Hunters the turn they drop.The Rhinos will race forward and try to get to the enemy and douse their rides with melta-goodness.

This is a very rough draft, and will likely change by the time it hits the table. Is there anything I should try to add or change?

Finally got it to work! your Blog is now successfully represented in my blog roll, that was kind of annoying.

Looks like a good army. I need some more experience against some SW drop pod armies because I am trying to figure out how to help Nocker Geek, but as I have not played against them much most of my advice has been conjectural.

Pretty Busy this week fighting Chris Kluwe on Sat and Chad on Sunday and trying to find time to paint, but let me know what days are generally good times to get a game in with ya.

@Krox

Sounds like you have a busy weekend! Generally the best days for me are weekends, but for the next month I'm going to be busy with our wedding which is in June. After that we will have to set something up.

I had heard that Kluwe played 40k, which is pretty sweet. Are you gonna batrep that one?

@JTaylor

Congrats on the wedding, I won't bug ya about getting a battle until after that is over.

I pretty much batrep everything, that's the whole reason I started the blog!

@Krox

Thanks, we are both looking forward to it and being done with all the planning etc..

As to the drop pod army and suggestions for it, I like to make sure I run an odd number. With an odd number you have more pods coming in on turn 1, which to me means better options of which units arrive. The one down side to drop pods is that it usually mean you are going to be up close and personal right away, so troops that are good at taking a charge is a must.

The biggest caution flag that sticks out to me is they are all foot slogging 6" once they get out of the drop pod and cannot assault the turn they arrive. Which means that any fast moving army like Eldar, BA, Tau, etc are going to just dance around you keeping those CC weapons from bitting and pumping you full of lead from a distance.

@JTaylor, of which, there are none in the Tau empire, so I would have to feed those assaulters something non-essential and something that would be destroyed in the first assault so I could shoot them up in my turn. A risky gambit but one I am itching to try out!

If I was running Logan I would grab a Long Fang squad with him, kit them out with lots of Killy and leave the heavy weapons off the Wolf Guards, drop the Grey Hunters, and add a big Wolf Guard squad instead (18pt a piece for veterans, yes please).

NO idea if it would work, but it would be in your face for sure. Might have to look out for opponents picking you apart piece by piece with small squads.

How common is 1500pt around the twin cities? My army is slowly getting ready for game time, but it's a 1500pt army. Thinking of expanding to 1750 and 1850 but things are not moving fast:) Need to get some games in and not just paint.

Using a speed bump unit would slow down the assault for sure, but like Pavonis said, not being able to assault the turn they drop in is a big down side. That gives any army the ability to move away from the CC units that dropped in, fast moving units or not...

The one thing to look out for when playing a drop pod army is being boxed in by the pods. If my opponent does not keep his army in reserve (a common tactic when facing a 1st turn deep strike army) I would use my pods to block his movement. That way they either have to destroy the pods to move away or be left in the jaws of a hungry wolf ;)

@Flekkzo

From what I have seen and heard, most of the games played around the Twin Cities are above 1500 points and closer to 1750-2000 range. The group I play with tends to stick near 1500 because most of us feel the game is much more tactical at that level, and can be played a lot quicker. I have heard some rumors that a newly opened Event Center is looking into running tournaments at 1500 points, but as of yet that still just hear-say.

How ya gonna box in skimmers and jet packs :P

Have yet to fight a drop pod army though so I am excited to see if my theories work out :)

@Flekkzo
Fantasy Flight Games in Roseville is the event center I think, they are hosting an escalation league that starts the first Sunday of June. I am doing it and I think Pavonis is as well. They start at 500 points and play every other week, adding 250 points. It is a painting league so it is good motivation to get your army painted.

It seems like a nice place and I will be posting my battles on the blog along with general opinions on everything that goes on there.

@ Krox

Skimmers are paper to my rock..

One Of the reasons I have yet to fully commit to a drop pod army is the severe lack of mobility once my pods hit the table. If I'm not able to catch the enemy the game is lost for me...

Kroxitau said...

@JTaylor

But if you DO catch me I am completely tabled :) Because I am not gonna do a whole lot in CC

Which is why I think it would be such a fun game. A lot of tension on what can get where and deployment would be super key. I think it would make for an exciting battle
